Description

This small cabinet is made to sit on a chest, desk or bureau and act as a unique storage solution. Made in solid American Black Cherry and Curly Hard Maple, it features two traditional sliding shoji doors, backed with rice paper. The main case is joined with fine handcut dovetails with mitred corners for a more refined appearance than traditional dovetail joinery. Inside are six smooth-fitting drawers all made with handcut dovetails both front and back and quartersawn solid Cherry drawer bottoms. The back panel assembly of this piece is made from solid Cherry and is an elegant and traditional frame and panel assembly, complete with decorative beading on the panels. This beading was cut with a workshop-made cutter that was fashioned from a piece of an old handsaw blade. The curved feet serve to lift the cabinet from the surface it is sitting on, ensuring it can be seen as a unique standalone piece. A project of devotion, no expense in time was spared in the making of this piece, with many traditional methods utilised, including the use of plow planes to cut the grooves for the sliding doors, the use of tongue and groove planes to make the back panel assembly and then handsawn components of the shoji screen doors. Finished in hand rubbed shellac and wax. Approximately 600x425x225mm. Available as is or in a similar style for larger cabinets or sideboards.
