I was intrigued by the way magpies build their nests and draw beautiful things into the interior. I designed this coffee table so that you could look through the glass top down into the nest where you would find some treasure.

Stock on Hand: 1 available

- Base is 360mm high
- 450mm high
- Finished by a glass top of 600mm diameter.

The base is reclaimed Rimu from a 1910 table, with a ply capping finished in Japan Black and burnishing oil. The warps are copper piping. The nest itself is made with wool, fabric and synthetic materials and interspersed with New Zealand Paua shell - as a nod to Victoria's place of origin. When one looks through the glass more paua shells can be seen piled up on the base of the table to form the magpie's shiny treasure.

Using techniques learned from Kathy Balngayngyu Marika and Kristen Lethem, the woven elements of this table feature a single continuous string. The string is made with a twisting and wrapping technique as materials are rolled together and is most often made with a community of women sitting talking and laughing together as their hands work in a rhythmic motion to produce the work.

Traditionally made with grasses that speak to ‘place,’ I have modified the materials to those that say something about my own place of origin.
