Bombora Furniture, located in Torquay on the Victorian Surf Coast, specialises in refined recycled timber furniture. For head designer Luke Collins, creativity comes from converting necessity into something of beauty. Taking what the client needs for their home to display, hide or house things and designing something that transcends the purpose with a timelessness and style adaptability that will see it last the decades. The deceivingly simple silhouette of strait lines quintessential to a Bombora design lets the texture, flowing grains and striking sap lines of the recycled timber be the unique feature of each piece. The design process is fluid and continues into the build of each piece as the timber is chosen and laid out. The timber is moved until each piece looks its best. Bombora Furniture is not mass produced on a production line. Each piece is crafted by a single furniture maker who takes pride in seeing the project to completion.
Recycled timber has a warmth, personality and uniqueness that is unmatched. We are lucky to have an abundance of beautiful native hardwood timbers in Australia such as the character filled Messmate from which the majority of our furniture is constructed from, the blonde and clean Tasmanian Oak to the rich and red tones of Jarrah, Red Gum and Spotted Gum. To finish our pieces, we use a combination of furniture oil and wax to create a silky soft, easy care surface that brings out the natural beauty of the timber rather than hiding it.
At Bombora Custom Furniture, all of our furniture is bespoke and made to our clients’ specifications of size, timber type, thickness and character level. The design process differs for each client with some wanting an exact copy of a piece in our portfolio and others taking inspiration from elsewhere, bringing different aspects of many designs together to create something perfect for them. Occasionally, much to Luke’s delight, a client gives us free reign to design something totally original. One of our most popular pieces, the Childers TV cabinet, came about from a client bringing us a retro 70’s poster to use as the inspiration.
As everything we do is custom and made to order, we do not hold any stock. We do however welcome appointments at the workshop in Torquay, only 70 minutes from Melbourne, to look at what is currently in production as well as any pieces that are completed and waiting for pick up or delivery. Freight is available Australia wide.
