Coming from a family of artists, crafts people and creative educators Samuels’ knowledge of practical design processes comes as second nature to him. From a very early age he had unlimited access to all things art and craft including corners of his parents studio spaces where he would involve himself in painting, drawing, ceramics, printing, weaving, rug making, kit building and basic furniture making. He still works with tools he received when he was 11 as well as some of his great-grandfathers thus continuing a family legacy of hands-on craftsmen.

In 1999 he attended Sydney College of the Arts where he studied Jewellery and Object Design, moving on to Painting and Drawing in his second year. While his time there was brief it set him towards the path of cabinetmaking and in 2002 started an apprenticeship with Contemporary Furniture Design in Marrickville, Sydney.

A move to Melbourne in 2004 saw Samuel complete his apprenticeship with a theatre and TV set building company, Showorks. From there he continued to amass a wide range of experiences in set building working as a subcontractor to such companies as The Melbourne Theatre Company, OnSet Arts and Illusions.

Moving away from set building Samuel began working for smaller independent companies such as Ritchie Built and Acemorning, performing on and offsite construction and installations for Cafés, Bars and Restaurant fit outs. A small stint with Titanium Constructions allowed Samuel to gain experience as a house builder, expanding his knowledge with yet another form of construction.

Samuel currently works from his private workshop located at The Salvage Yard in Castlemaine. His workshop is where he designs and creates his own furniture as well as custom pieces for a handful of private clients. On top of all this Samuel is a workshop supervisor at The Victorian College of the Arts in Southbank, Melbourne where he guides students through correct workshop practice and building techniques.

Samuel J O’Donnell is settled in Castlemaine, Central Victoria with his wife Katherine and a menagerie of pets.
