Description

Gramophone sculpture.

Bull Oak, brass, Sugar Gum, copper, glass, paint, rose thorns, Swiss made Thorens wind up gramophone workings.

This one is a pretty crazy piece and, yes it does play records and very nicely too.
The main body of the piece is a wildly contorted piece of Bull Oak, a tree which grows in dry areas from central Western Victoria and into Western NSW. A one in a million find that I happened upon whilst on a wood collecting trip on a farm in Southern Central NSW.
The sound horn is made from copper sheet, cut into strips, beaten, riveted and patinated.
I chose to incorporate rose thorns into this piece as the early gramophones often used these as their needles.
Much time was spent cleaning and restoring the old workings of the gramophone, the Swiss made them very well.
This thing has a lot of volume and what a joy it is to wind it up, set the needle on the vinyl and watch the cogs and spindles turn within the glass case.
I liked making this!
