At Handkrafted, we have a comprehensive community of independent Australian woodworkers and it is our aim to not only promote these fantastic craftspeople but also to help preserve and promote the time-honoured and traditional techniques of woodworking and furniture making.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

We’ve compiled the following\u00a0list of fine furniture making schools, woodworking courses and carpentry classes for those of you who are interested in learning the craft\u00a0or wanting to further develop\u00a0your existing skills.<\/p>\n

NSW<\/strong><\/p>\n

Andrew Pinnock<\/a> – Smithfield, Sydney<\/p>\n

Andrew has been designing and making bespoke furniture for over 25 years. He also teaches at the Architecture Faculty at Sydney University. He offers a number of weekday or Saturday classes, including an option for individual tuition.<\/em><\/p>\n

Girl and Grain<\/a> – Northern Beaches, Sydney<\/p>\n

Katie offers weekend and evening classes for small groups as well as private lessons for those wanting more one-on-one attention. Katie focuses on creating a welcoming and non-intimidating atmosphere and provides supportive guidance to all her students, with safety as a top priority.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

Grant Vaughan: Designs in Wood <\/a>– Rock Valley<\/p>\n

Offers several five-day workshops in wood carving\u00a0as well as personal tuition in small classes. All abilities catered for.<\/em><\/p>\n

Heartwood Creative Woodworking<\/a> – Marrickville, Sydney<\/p>\n

Run by Stuart Faulkner, a former Director of the Sturt School for Wood, classes include an 8 week Intro Course for beginners, ongoing group sessions, one-on-one tuition and specialist short courses.<\/em><\/p>\n

Illawarra Woodwork School<\/a> – Wollongong<\/p>\n

Classes are taught by Stuart Montague, with term lengths of 10 weeks generally.<\/em><\/p>\n

MakerSpace &company<\/a> –\u00a0Marrickville, Sydney<\/p>\n

Offer a constantly evolving range of courses for beginners and up including everything from furniture to carving and cheese board making. Best of all, after your class become a member and continue to develop your skills in their workshop.<\/em><\/p>\n

Paul Nicholson<\/a> – Marrickville, Sydney<\/p>\n

Run by Paul Nicholson, who offers a range of classes<\/em><\/p>\n

Piece Furniture <\/a>– Marrickville, Sydney<\/p>\n

Run by John Gallagher, a renowned maker with over ten\u00a0years experience, the Piece Furniture classes cater to both beginners and experienced students.<\/em><\/p>\n

Richard Crosland\u2019s School for Fine Furniture <\/a>– Alexandria, Sydney<\/p>\n

Claimed to be the oldest furniture making school in Sydney, the Crosland brothers run weekday and Sunday morning classes.<\/em><\/p>\n

Splinter Workshop<\/a> – St Peters, Sydney<\/p>\n

Focusing on hand tools, the workshop runs 10 week term classes as well as specialised short courses with one tutor to every 4 students.<\/em><\/p>\n

Sturt School for Wood <\/a>– Mittagong<\/p>\n

Offer a\u00a0range of courses from\u00a0one\u00a0day and weekend classes to courses lasting a full year. All abilities welcomed.<\/em><\/p>\n

TAFE NSW<\/a>\u00a0– Lidcome and Coffs Harbour<\/p>\n

Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Manufacturing<\/em><\/p>\n

Terry Gleeson School of Woodwork<\/a> –\u00a0Dural, Sydney<\/p>\n

Terry teaches woodwork, turning, carving, dovetailing and other joinery techniques to students wanting to learn the craft.<\/em><\/p>\n

Two Sheds Workshops<\/a> – Bega, Far South Coast<\/p>\n

Classes and workshops for women and children (ages 7+ through to teens).<\/em><\/p>\n

Woodwork for Beginners, Sydney Community College <\/a>–\u00a0Leichhardt Campus, Sydney<\/p>\n

A course designed to teach students woodwork theory, jointing methods and other basic woodworking skills, as well as the opportunity to undertake a small project.<\/em><\/p>\n

Woodwork for Women<\/a> – Mullumbimby<\/p>\n

Classes run for women by Patt Gregory, a female carpenter\/joiner who has thirty\u00a0\u00a0years of experience in the field. She holds threee to four\u00a0day workshops teaching women basic woodworking as well as how to\u00a0handle tools.<\/em><\/p>\n

VIC<\/strong><\/p>\n

Melbourne Guild of Fine Woodworking<\/a> –\u00a0Blackburn<\/p>\n

Offers three\u00a0month courses for beginners, weekly\u00a0speciality classes as well as master classes for\u00a0the more advanced.<\/em><\/p>\n

Melbourne School for Fine Woodworking<\/a> \u2013\u00a0Box Hill<\/p>\n

Not for profit woodworking club, daytime and evening classes taught by furniture makers, all abilities welcome. The school specialise in working with hand tools and run several one and two day courses \u2013 box making, wood finishing etc.<\/em><\/p>\n

Moonlite Studios<\/a> \u2013 Mount Egerton, Central Victoria<\/p>\n

Offers a range of beginner and advanced woodwork and furniture making classes with regular teacher Ross Annels.<\/em><\/p>\n

Newstead Wood School<\/a> – Newstead<\/p>\n

Newstead Wood School is a place for aspiring craftspeople to gather, learn and pursue the art & craft of Fine Woodworking. A Place where a wholistic approach to woodworking is fostered and a sensitive and thoughtful approach is encouraged<\/em><\/p>\n

Phoebe Everill Furniture Making School<\/a> –\u00a0Drummond<\/p>\n

Phoebe runs classes for absolute beginners through to advanced students. The School provides a flexible and personalised approach to woodworking in a spectacular location.<\/em><\/p>\n

SkillBuild<\/a> – Mount Egerton<\/p>\n

Trade certified training in fine furniture making in a modular, flexible format.<\/em><\/p>\n

Steel Road Fine Woodworking School<\/a> – Yackandandah (Near Albury Wodonga)<\/p>\n

Previously known as Handsome & Co, Est 2013. Experienced tutor Elliot Gorham, is dedicated to teaching students fine furniture making, by combining traditional woodworking skills with modern techniques. Check out their Handkrafted profile.<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n

Victorian Woodworkers Association<\/a> –\u00a0North Melbourne<\/p>\n

Classes normally revolve around a project of the students choosing, usually a piece of furniture or a skill they want to learn or improve. Two\u00a0month\/ten session terms, with classes run daily\u00a0by three\u00a0skilled tutors.<\/em><\/p>\n

QLD<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Brisbane School of Fine Furniture<\/a> –\u00a0Samford Valley, Brisbane<\/p>\n

A small school that runs intimate, four\u00a0student classes and offers \u2018casual classes\u2019 for more experienced individuals.<\/em><\/p>\n

Bywater Design School of Fine Furniture<\/a> –\u00a0Northgate<\/p>\n

The school has classes in surfboard and paddleboard design as well as fine furniture and woodworking techniques.<\/em><\/p>\n

Damion Fauser<\/a> – Darra<\/p>\n

Attend a variety of weekly classes or join an\u00a0intensive two week course in the art of acoustic guitar building.<\/em><\/p>\n

Richard Vaughan Classes in Fine Woodwork<\/a> –\u00a0Summer Park<\/p>\n

Run in his \u2018shedudio\u2019, Richard holds a comprehensive,\u00a0seven\u00a0week woodworking course for up to seven students at a time. Each week a new joint is tackled.<\/em><\/p>\n

RM School of Woodworking<\/a> – Greenslopes, Brisbane<\/p>\n

Run by Rob McKee, a carpenter with forty\u00a0years of experience in the field. He runs several evening and daytime classes from introductory sessions to more advanced techniques.<\/em><\/p>\n

Studio Dubbeld\u00a0<\/a>& Australia Guitar Making School\u00a0–\u00a0Townsville<\/p>\n

Hands on classes is led by Luthier Joel Dubbeld, teaching students to build stringed instruments from scratch. At Studio Dubbeld\u00a0students can select their own woodworking content and benefit from one on one tuition in a class environment.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n

WA<\/strong><\/p>\n

Erasmus School of Creative Arts<\/a> – Pickering Brook<\/p>\n

The Erasmus school is run by a fine furniture making couple. They offer one to one mentoring, women\u2019s only courses, bench space sessions for experienced woodworkers and four\u00a0day courses that focus on specific pieces.<\/em><\/p>\n

Scott Horsburgh<\/a> – Yallingup<\/p>\n

Australian School for Fine Furniture<\/a> – University of Tasmania, Launceston<\/p>\n

The School offers a two-year Associate Degree in Furniture Design and a three-year Bachelor of Environmental Design (Furniture Design).<\/em><\/p>\n

Derwent Valley School of Creative Woodwork<\/a>\u00a0– New Norfolk<\/p>\n

Plane and Chisel<\/a>, Johnny Mackay – Lenah Valley<\/p>\n

Courses range from a half-day theory session on woodworking tools and techniques to several days where <\/em>participants experience theory and practice, crafting a beautiful keepsake and functional piece in the process.<\/em><\/p>\n

Wisdom Through Wood<\/a> –\u00a0Nicholls Rivulet<\/p>\n

Tasmania\u2019s only green woodworking school set in beautiful bushland, the school helps individuals learn about sustainable carpentry as well as teaching them woodworking skills. You can chose between day courses to workshops that last for over a week.<\/em><\/p>\n

SA<\/strong><\/p>\n

Adelaide Hills Woodworking with Ben Crosweller<\/a> – Adelaide Hills<\/p>\n

Set in the beautiful Adelaide Hills, Ben\u00a0teaches both short courses offering a taste of woodworking and a longer 10-week course providing a more comprehensive introduction to woodworking.<\/em><\/p>\n

Henry Eckert Fine Woodwork School<\/a> –\u00a0Kent Town, Adelaide<\/p>\n

Under the teaching of Adrian Potter, students here can take one of several structured\/specific courses as well as \u2018open classes\u2019 where they are welcome to tackle a project of their choosing under supervision.<\/em><\/p>\n

SA Woodcarving Academy<\/a> – St Peters, Adelaide<\/p>\n

Flexible weekly class times run throughout the year, with class sizes limited to 12 students. Under supervision of master carver Ken Vear.<\/em><\/p>\n

ACT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Australian National University School of Art<\/a><\/p>\n

The University runs both a fine woodworking course and a Japanese woodworking course over ten\u00a0week terms.<\/em><\/p>\n

Woodcraft Guild<\/a> –\u00a0Woden<\/p>\n

As well as a providing a place for wood crafting enthusiasts to meet and talk about their shared passions, the guild also offer woodworking workshops for their members.<\/em><\/p>\n
